An Overview Of Home Security Systems

Back in the mid-19th century, the history of home security systems began. A businessman from New England name Edwin Holmes bought a patent from a man named Augustus R. Pope, entitled "Improvement in Electro-Magnetic Alarms". He used it to develop the very first burglar alarm, and with it, began his own business.

In New York City, possibly the greatest metropolis in the history of America, burglary was becoming a serious problem, even for the wealthy. Holmes felt it was the perfect place to start his business, and so he did. The very first burglar alarm contained a circuit that, when triggered, would make the bell ring. It used very primitive technology, as it was comprised only o a few simple wire connections.

Aside from his primary alarm business, he also created a storage safe with a new and interesting twist; it contained a silent alarm that would notify the police when it was triggered. This alarm also used the same basic wiring connections, but with added technology to reach the police and remain silent. This led to increasing arrests of thieves, as they were not aware that any alarm had been set off when they attempted to get inside of the safe.

The evolution of home security systems has significantly progressed since the 19th century; the burglar alarm, especially, is now a complex electronic device instead of a simple bell circuit. Of the many different types of burglar alarms used today, the passive infrared detector (PIR for short) is one of the most common. When fitted to a door or window, it keeps track of the temperature in the surrounding area; when an object moves into the area, a temperature change occurs and the alarm is triggered.

The second most common alarm in use is the ultrasonic detector. They produce inaudible sound waves so as not to disturb human hearing. In this case a moving object interrupts the frequencies of sound waves as they move through the air. The alarm is triggered as soon as the object moves towards, or away from, the device.

A "burglar alarm control panel" controls every home security system at once. It is an electronic device placed on a wall that, with a keypad, can control all sound wave sensors, motion detectors, smoke detectors, etc. That are in use. They also direct phone calls that come from the company who manages the system when any alarm in the house goes off.

However, simple alarms that detect burglary are not the only services offered by protection companies; they also offer communication systems (as previously mentioned), fire alarms/smoke detectors, and video cameras for one's home and/or surrounding property.
